How to Ignore Internal Links on Web Pages Very Quickly

Internal linking, or creating links that point to some of your own web pages, is generally practiced on sites for three reasons:

1. Internal links can quickly add context. Instead of writing a summary of some topic that you covered in detail the other day, you can just create an hyperlink to that old story and readers can follow the link in case they are curious to learn more about that topic.

2. Internal linking with good anchor text can affect your site rankings in search engines. And this is a big reason why so may sites link back to themselves so frequently.

Highlight external links, hide internal links

When I am reading a new story on some blog that I have been following for a long time, I generally tend to ignore all internal links and hunt for links that point to external website. It’s a constant battle – place your cursor over a link, look at the target location in the browser’s status bar – if points outside, click the link else move to the next one in the loop.

This is a case where too much self-linking becomes confusing as well time-wasting for the reader. To illustrate, here’s a screenshot of a story that was recently published in a popular tech blog. All hyperlinks are in green and therefore finding the external ones might require some effort.

Before: Both internal and external hyperlinks are of the same color

After: The external hyperlinks get highlighted

The second screenshot is of the same story but now anyone can figure out the external links because they are highlighted in blue while the internal links were changed to black or grey.

» Highlight External Links – Drag to the bookmarks toolbar

This is possible through a simple bookmarklet – you drag the above link to your bookmarks (or favorites) toolbar and click the link while you are on any web page.

The bookmarklet will change the colors of links on the page (without reloading) making it easy for you to distinguish between external and internal links. In case you want to revert to the previous scheme, just hit the refresh button.

The bookmarklet turns internal links to black but you can modify the source to use any custom colors.

How to Secretly Access Digg Without Letting Anyone Know

Like to know a secret way to browse Digg during office hours with letting your boss know about it. You can apply the same trick to access Digg when the site has been blocked by your school authorities.

OK, the secret sauce lies here – evercleancanada.com and tmpnetwork.com – these are like Digg mirrors on the same web server that hosts the actual Digg.com websites.

Now if you cannot access Digg stories from a computer or would like to secretly access them without letting the IT department know about it, just replace the word digg in the URL with evercleancanada or tmpnetwork. Here’s an example:

A: http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_Microsoft_Bidding_For_Digg
B: http://evercleancanada.com/tech_news/Google_Microsoft_Bidding_For_Digg
C: http://tmpnetwork.com/tech_news/Google_Microsoft_Bidding_For_Digg

These web pages are exact copies of each other but in the last two cases, the images, javascript and css files are served from evercleancanada.com or tmpnetwork.com instead of digg.com so the server logs in your office won’t know what you did on Digg.

Create Disposable Web Notes That Disappear After Being Read

Got a secret message to share with someone? Check out Privnote.

Privnote (short for Private Notes) is a simple web service for creating web notes that self-destruct or become unavailable as soon as they are read.

Type a text note in the space provided and you’ll be provided with a one-time use hyperlink that you can send over an IM or email message. Once the link is clicked, the associated text note is deleted forever.

There’s a read receipt option if you like to get notified as soon as your web note is opened by the recipient.

PrivNote – If you send a note and suddenly regret having done so, just click the link yourself which will erase the note forever so no one can read it.

Get a Temporary Email Account Instead of Disposable Email Address

New web services are launched almost every hour that require you to register with a valid email address before you can play with the service. Same goes with discussion boards and internet forums - they will ask your email before letting you in.

And each time you share your personal email address with a not-so-popular website, you run the risk of getting more spam.

Then came disposable email address services like SpamBox or Mailexpire, that let you create temporary email address which expire after a given time. These service forward all mails to your primary email inbox until the temporary email account expires.

A more useful player in the game is 10MinuteMail.com which actually provides a disposable email account and not just a use-n-throw email address.

With 10 Minute Mail, you get a temporary e-mail address. Any e-mails sent to this disposable address will show up automatically on the temporary web page that's visible only to you.

You can read new emails send to the disposable address and even reply to the messages using your new address. Read message are indicated with a tick. And everything expires after 10 minutes or more.

This is much safer since you no longer have to share your personal email with anyone, not even the disposable email service.
